 Nuestra Historia

In 1964, a small group of Hispanic students, known as “Los Tertulianos” formed a student organization to promote the Hispanic culture of Texas Tech University. At the time, Los Tertulianos was the first minority student organization established at Texas Tech and set the building blocks of things to come. As the organization traveled through time and grew, the name changed with it. In the mid-70’s it was known as UMAS (United Mexican American Students) before the organization finally settled on the Hispanic Student Society in 1984.

Over the years, the Hispanic Student Society has not only grown, but has built up it's involvement with the Texas Tech and Lubbock community. Here are some the many accomplishments the Hispanic Student Society has come to become proud of:

1st multicultural organization at Texas Tech University.

Creators of the "Original Salsa Night".

Hosting the annual Hispanic Cultural Awareness Week.

Establishing in 1964 and officially becoming known as the Hispanic Student Society in 1984

Offering scholarship opportunities to active members at Texas Tech.

Being featured a number of times in a variety of publications including the Daily Toreador, LubbockOnline, and Latino Lubbock.

Being the umbrella organization to all hispanic multicultural organizations on campus.
